The speculation about The Game Awards has been intense, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer featuring intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.
Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team could be crafting a faster-paced experience instead of another tactical title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it pioneered the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—traits that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.
Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs only possible by choosing a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.
The series is also notoriously permissive, enabling players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be approached in diverse methods, often in unexpected fashion.
- You might find an answer because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is precisely these elements that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can anticipate another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
